MORE TO LIFE THAN DRUGS

Half of All Inmates are Dependent on Drugs

According to a recent article in Join Together

Half of all prison inmates are dependent on drugs -- including many incarcerated on non drug-related offenses -- but less than 20 percent get the treatment they need, according to a new report from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).

"Addiction is a stigmatized disease that the criminal justice system often fails to view as a medical condition; as a consequence, its treatment is not as available as it is for other medical conditions," said Redonna K. Chandler, principal author of the report and chief of NIDA's Services Research Branch.

NIDA researchers stressed that the criminal-justice system is ideal for getting people into treatment and applying pressure to complete therapy. They noted that a dollar spent on drug courts, for example, saves $4 in healthcare costs, while a dollar spent on prison-based treatment saves $2-$6.”

It is true that we need to face the fact that most people are in prison because of drug abuse and the issue should be addressed when there is plenty of time in prison.

However, we need to ensure that as people leave prison they have a supportive drug treatment program to report to upon entering back into real life. This is the time when they will be tempted to hook back up with their old friends and pick up old habits, knowing little else.

Through an effective treatment program they will learn that there is more to life than drugs and in fact, anyone can turn their life around given the proper guidance, tools and desire.

Narconon has worked with several persons who had recently gotten out of prison or jail for drugs with a high percentage of success and little recidivism. 877-413-3073

Being Addicted To Drugs Is Misery

Being addicted to drugs is misery. Finding treatment can seem impossible or confusing. There are as many theories about addiction as there are rehabs and those looking for answers are already stressed.

A recent survey showed that 9.2 percent of all Americans fall under the category of abusers of alcohol or drugs – yet just 1.6 percent of the population received any kind of treatment for addiction. 1/3 of those reported that they tried to get treatment but could not.

Certainly, with all the resources this country has to offer, we can do better job of helping those addicted.

It starts with learning the truth about drugswhy people take them and how addiction works. Then one can understand what kind of treatment will work, based on understanding.

Don’t rely on the “experts”. Gain understanding and think for yourself.

Learn about drugs and treatment that works at www.drugsno.com. Let us know if you are one of those who tried to get drug treatment and couldn’t.

BINGE DRINKING

We need the next generation to prepare itself for leadership by gaining knowledge through study. This is a little harder to do with an impaired mind. In other words, we don’t need binge drinking in high school and college.

Apparently, according to research, binge drinkers suffer from memory impairment and possible physical harm to their still forming brains.

There are other obvious possible distractions to the binge drinker such as car accidents, DUIs and arrests – not helpful in preparing for the future or studying for exams.

Alcohol has always been around campuses – however it seemed like the majority of the students had enough sense to not ruin their lives through binge drinking and it was the minority that wasn’t really expected to set the world on fire anyway. With the recent “wizard stick” parties being promoted on the internet, we cannot assume that this is now the case. Someone needs to take heed and provide drug and alcohol education and enlighten these kids in a way that communicates.

If you need drug education brochures, we will provide them for you. If you know someone who is binge drinking they need help. Call us and we will help you get them help. We can help with interventions too.

OXYCONTIN TRENDS

Over the last several months the intake counselors at Narconon of Georgia have noticed an increase in the number of calls for Oxycontin abuse. Some of these abusers have gotten their Oxycontin through doctor shopping or have bought the pills off the street.

Local law enforcement reports that there are more Oxycontin related arrests and a noticeable increase in Oxycontin abuse, especially over the last 6 months. Most of the Oxycontin tablets are initially legally obtained through a prescription, but later sold on the street for 10 to 50 dollars a tablet, depending on the dosage and some people are addicted to their own prescriptions. Robberies of pharmacies are yet another source Oxycontin sales.

Regardless of where an addict gets their Oxycontin, it is a dangerous drug. The time release nature of it makes it especially dangerous (often deadly) to snort or shoot up. Oxycontin is very addictive – a person gets addicted quickly. At the same time the withdrawal is extremely uncomfortable, often unconfrontable.

There has been a lot of press on Oxycontin especially concentrating on the fraudulent sales practices of Purdue. The Purdue lawsuits surfaced in 2007 and here in 2009 we are still seeing an increase in Oxycontin abuse.

It is obviously up to families, communities and drug treatment programs to effectively deal with Oxycontin abuse.

If you know someone who is addicted to Oxycontin, get them effective drug treatment. Narconon has a 76% success rate. If you have a bad Oxycontin abuse problem in your neighborhood, call Narconon of Georgia at 877-413-3073 and we will get you some educational materials.

The wrong thing to do is sit back and watch without doing anything.

Breaking the Chains of Addiction

NARCONON REALIZATION

Here is another Narconon realization. Whether a person is abusing cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine or pot there is a road out. Narconon drug treatment is the new life program. 877-413-3073

“I am having the biggest win I have had yet by working with my buddy. To see him change right in front of my eyes is amazing. At first, he had had reservations about what objectives could potentially accomplish. Now he has begun to see the light and this is what I’ve really started to live for. To watch someone who was chained and beaten down by their addiction break free and climb out of the darkness makes my own light shine even brighter. So through other people’s recovery I find my own recovery strengthen.”

Drugs Play No Role In My Future

NARCONON REALIZATION

Here is another Narconon realization from a drug treatment student.

“I am to stay focused and forever going to keep myself in control and making my first priority my well being.

I know what I am today and not living in past memories of who I was, but who I am today. I am who I am.

All the things I was yesterday are not important today. I am a product of all that I’ve been but I’m that product living in the actual world today.

I am important and I need to address my needs first and if possible, help others along the way. By understanding I have control of me and everything I come into contact with, I can be sure that all that I connect myself with or get involved with will forever be a positive influence or connection to my own personal life.

Drugs play no role in my future – they remove my own importance and that I can never have again. I will not allow the drugs to pull me back inside my own head to the point that I do not even know who I am.

I know that from this day on I will always look to control me in a positive way by living in the present.”

Whether a person has abused heroin, pot, cocaine or methamphetamine, the Narconon program has something to teach them about themselves. Each lesson learned is a step closer to freedom.

Realizations Achieved From Drug Treatment Program

NARCONON REFLECTION

Here is a Narconon student’s reflection, written with the hope that others will read it and reach for help. No matter the drug – heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, pot or any other drug of abuse, Narconon program can help bring about those realizations that will help a person become drug free and happy.

“This course has taught me to be more aware and to appreciate the joy and pleasure of having all my senses. They are a gift. I have eyes to see the beauty that is in creation. Colors are alive and objects and people are live to me.

I have ears to hear beautiful sounds and hands to touch and to write, cook and draw with. I have feet to run!

I have taken for granted these gifts to me. Right now I write this in appreciation of the gift of my senses. It is as if I have been reborn!”

Health Care Costs

It is more interesting and appealing when Mary Bono Mack speaks about addiction in her own family and she wants to do something about it as regards to public health.

Michael Jackson put addiction back on the radar screen and the need for addiction treatment is starting to appear.

As Congress is talking about health care and costs, this topic needs to be pushed to the forefront.  There is unlikely any other condition that is costing as much as addiction is in terms of money and lost lives.

Whether they are abusing heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine or prescription drugs, these are real people, with real families and they need real help.

Narconon drug treatment 877-413-3073

"Inland Rep. Mary Bono Mack will speak Saturday in Moreno Valley about her son's struggle with drugs and her efforts to include addiction prevention in the ongoing health care reform debate.

The talk, part of a substance abuse conference at the Riverside Community College District's Moreno Valley campus, is aimed at youths, young adults and parents. It's free and open to the public.

"I think it's important to raise the awareness," said Bono Mack, R-Palm Springs. "I believe we should hear discussion about addiction from dining-room tables to the halls of Congress."

The conference will include presentations from public health officials about substance abuse in the Inland area and the impact of substance abuse on the adolescent brain, said Chris Carlson, chief of staff for district Chancellor Gregory W. Gray.

There will also be panel discussions featuring substance abuse experts and students, Carlson said."

The Only Way To Freedom From Drugs

Someone's got it right here and they are not afraid to say it – methadone or other replacement therapies are not as good as just good old fashion abstinence and drug rehab.

The only way to freedom from drugs is to walk down a path that is not always easy to travel.  However, at least the travelers are moving towards a definable goal and not standing still while pretending they are getting somewhere.

Opiate addiction is not best treated by more opiates, just like diabetes is not well treated by eating more sugar.

Narconon drug treatment 877-413-3073

"It is estimated that close to 10 percent of the Bangor population abuse illicit drugs, not including marijuana. More Mainers die annually from drug overdoses than car accidents. If these statistics surprise you, you’re not alone.

So, what can be done for people trapped in these horrible addictions?

When I’m not in class, doing homework or trying to figure out something to write in this column, I work at the Derek House — a traditional drug and alcoholism rehabilitation center in Bangor. It is a nine-month program that includes group therapy, individual counseling, life skills teaching, coping strategy classes and of course, the message of total abstinence from addictive substances.

This form of treatment is not bulletproof, but if clients take it seriously and really work toward their sobriety, it can be profoundly effective.

There is a radically different form of treatment available and it has government approval despite strong opposition from some traditional rehab clinics like the Derek House. It’s called drug replacement therapy, and it does more harm than good.

Instead of helping addicts get off drugs by helping them get off drugs, this new “treatment” helps addicts get off illegal drugs by getting them hooked on legal drugs. The most common example of this is methadone, a synthetic opioid given to abusers of heroin and other opiates. Because it affects the same brain receptors, methadone easily replaces their addiction to illicit drugs with an addiction to methadone, which is more potent than street drugs and has stronger withdrawal symptoms.

Bangor has three methadone clinics that treat about 1,300 people daily. I believe the people who oversee these clinics honestly think they are helping addicts. But the evidence doesn’t show that. According to the director of Addiction Treatment Services at Bangor’s largest methadone clinic, Brent Scobie, about half of their 650 methadone patients have been on the treatment for more than five years."

Well Done New York

This is great news – not only is the state of New York apparently pushing drug treatment instead of incarceration for those who are drug abusers,  there are some real stats to show they are going to save money and lives.

From the article – "Every $1 invested in addiction treatment programs yields a return of between $4 and $7 in reduced drug-related crime, criminal justice costs, and theft alone.

• Treatment Costs Less: $30,000 a year spent on residential treatment versus $40,000 a year for incarceration."

Well done to New York!

Governor Commended for Making Rockefeller Drug Law Reforms Real, Saving Lives Through Treatment

"ALBANY, NY (10/07/2009)(readMedia)-- State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Services (OASAS) Commissioner Karen M. Carpenter-Palumbo today commended the Governor on his leadership in making the Rockefeller Drug Law Reforms real - saving lives through treatment.

"Thanks to Governor Paterson's vision and staunch leadership, we are celebrating a historic day for the addiction field and all New Yorkers," said Commissioner Carpenter-Palumbo. "Today, the draconian and failed policies of the Rockefeller Drug Laws are replaced with real reforms that will lead to real recovery for thousands of individuals struggling with alcohol and drug addiction - saving lives."

For 35 years, New York placed a high concentration of drug users in prison under Rockefeller Drug Laws where drug possession resulted in lengthy prison terms. These misguided laws resulted in prison overcrowding, high costs to taxpayers and individuals being placed back in society who endlessly cycle back into the prison system, often referred to as the "revolving door" of addiction and crime."

War On Drugs Conference

Conferences like this one held recently in El Paso, Texas that examine current policy regarding the War on Drugs are important if there is to be any forward progress on the drug problem.

Whether we call it a war or not, the current and long term policies and procedures regarding drug abuse have been a failure in this country.  In fact, there is no evidence that there has been any progress made at all, since the problem keeps getting worse.  We most likely could have used these expenditures on other things and the scene would be the same.

The root of the problem is and has always been the customer.  If there are no customers, there is no problem.  "Consumer Education" or drug education ultimately is the answer – if there really is any concern to find an answer.

Our failed policies have helped to create 23 million drug abusers in this country. Whether they are abusing cocaine, heroin, methamphetamines, pot or prescription medications, these citizens are going to need help in the way of drug treatment.

There are solutions and they actually are not very difficult to implement.  Perhaps the 1st step of any drug prevention program is to discover why it appears that we really don't want a workable solution to the drug problem.

Narconon drug treatment 877-413-3073

"The U.S.'s 40-year "War on Drugs" has been "probably the greatest public-policy failure of all time" according to former federal drug agent Terry Nelson, just one of the many drug-war critics who gathered at a recent conference in El Paso, Texas to discuss alternatives to the current approach to drug policy.

The San Antonio Express-News reported Sept. 28 that the conference was hosted by the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and attracted academics, drug experts, journalists, and law-enforcement officials from the U.S. and Mexico. "After 40 years and all the money spent, with U.S. consumption as high as ever, people languishing in prison for possession of soft drugs like marijuana and the violence in Mexico worse than ever, it seems to me that something has to change," said UTEP professor Kathleen Staudt."

Narconon Warns Early Drinking May Lead to Drug Addiction

Study Shows Correlation With Young Drinkers and Drug Dependence.

Narconon Drug Rehab Georgia issued a warning to parents that the earlier a child starts drinking, the more likely they will become alcohol and/or drug dependent.

“A study published by Wiley InterScience showed that the risk for alcohol dependence increased with the decreasing age at first drink,” comments Mary Rieser, Executive Director for
Narconon Drug Rehab Georgia. “We have seen this trend in the past few years: the majority of clients coming in for addiction treatment for the most part started drinking in their very early teens. This then led for the most part to marijuana use, then to harder drug use, then to addiction.”

I WILL DO IT

NARCONON SUCCESS STORY

Here is a Narconon success story from someone who is on the objectives course.

“On this course I am reminded of many of my life situations and decisions.  While on drugs my mind was so clouded with negative thoughts and intentions.  I could never make up my mind to do the right things or make the right decisions.

Now that I am sober, I am confident that I will choose to do the right things – always.  I will make up my mind to hang out with the right people – and I will do it.  I will make up my mind to go to class every day and make the best grades I can – and I will do it.

I will make up my mind to treat everyone around me with respect and treat them how I would expect them to treat me, especially my parents – and I will do it.

Most importantly, I will make up my mind to live an honest, healthy, sober successful life and I WILL DO IT.

This will make me and everyone in my life feel nothing but pure joy from now on.”

TWO AMAZING EXPERIENCES IN ONE DAY

NARCONON REFLECTION

Here is another Narconon success story from today.  It is written by someone who had been hopeless addicted to methamphetamine.  However, it is written for those who have abused heroin, cocaine, pot or prescription drugs, because this path works for all drugs of abuse.

“WOW – talk about two amazing experiences in one day!  My first win on the objective course today was awesome, but the feeling I just had is INCREDIBLE!

Every ounce of frustration and negative energy just literally bounced out of my body.  What replaced it is almost indescribable.    I feel ecstatic, amazing, incredible, beautiful, wonderful – AWESOME!

No words can grasp the exact feeling that just came over me.  It literally sent shivers down my spine and goose bumps all over my body.

I am full of joy and excitement.

I can honestly say I have never felt this way before and I hope it lasts forever!”

THE WAY TO HAPPINESS

 NARCONON REFLECTION

Here is a Narconon success story – written and published here to let others know that no matter how severe the addiction problem, it can be handled.  No matter the drug – heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, or prescription drugs – there is a path out and each realization is a stepping stone.

“The Way to Happiness course is filled with a lot of common sense knowledge.  I know that if apply what I learned in this book, life will be a lot easier and worry free.  I also know it will only work if I apply it at the right time in the right way.

This book is about living life to the fullest and making something of yourself.

With the steps that I have learned, I feel that I can apply this and it will be hard to be unhappy.  Applying good ethics and morals is key to living a happy life.

I plan to use this information in the future – starting NOW!”

MY NEW BEST FRIEND

 NARCONON REFLECTION

Here is a Narconon success story written and published here with the hope that others will find similar help.  No matter the drug of abuse – heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, pot, Xanax, Oxycontin – any abuser can have successes like this.

“The main reason I used or abused drugs has suddenly occurred to me.  I had become so broken and beaten down in spirit.  I felt so bad about myself and I had become so totally withdrawn and paranoid.

Therefore going out in public or being around others made me nervous and my low self esteem gave me the idea that I needed "a little help."  It got to the point where I did not want to be aware of anything after awhile.

Now that I feel good about myself again, the comfortable awareness I have (which used to be scary) is now my new best friend.”

SOMETHING SO AMAZING AND LIFE CHANGING

NARCONON SUCCESS STORY

Here is a Narconon success story written today.  It is written about one of the courses at Narconon called Objectives.  It is written by someone who came to Narconon addicted to methamphetamine, but is printed here for those who have abused any drug – cocaine, pot, heroin, Oxycontin, or any drug of abuse.

"How can you find the words to write or explain about something so amazing and life changing as Objectives?  OK – in the beginning I really didn't see how these exercises would help me.

But I took this program seriously and what the supervisors said seriously and decided to give myself a chance.  I did and I had some really amazing wins.

I had sessions that would take me back to my past and then I would be right there in the present.  I am back in touch with me.

I am so thankful for my body and my health.  In the past I could have lost my body, due to all the situations I have found myself in.  These objectives made me grateful.

Next is my mind – I think more clearly now.  My mind is sharper, faster and my perception is better

I would not trade my experiences with objectives for anything! This was an experience that it is hard to find words for.  THANK YOU.”

BRIGHT, SOBER and PEACEFUL FUTURE

NARCONON REFLECTION

Here is another Narconon success story for the day.  Sobriety is attainable through one realization at a time.

Whether a person has been abusing cocaine, heroin, pot, methamphetamine, prescription drugs or Xanax, there is way out and this success is published here to pass on hope.

"Once upon a time, not so long ago, I looked at life, the world and my future with complete skepticism at its chaos and upset.  I had become unable to see anything as quite or peaceful. It was not that those things weren't in existence – I just couldn't see them.

Since my recent days on course, I have been able to focus on the tangible objects and contemplate how differently I can now view my world in present time.

Things look brighter, more possible and more real.  My perceptions have not only improved physically, but mentally and emotionally.  I finally feel stable.

My inner-man, my spirit has acquired an inner silence that allows me to be comfortably in the now and into my bright, sober and peaceful future."

LOCK IT UP

There are several ways to interpret the result of this national survey on substance abuse by youth.  One explanation of the shift from marijuana use to prescription drug abuse is that prescription drugs are easier to get – in fact most users are getting them right from home!

Studies have shown that the biggest influence on kids and their drug use is their parents.  What kind of responsibility is a parent demonstrating when they leave Oxycontin, Xanax, Vicodin, Percocet or any other opiate available for the taking?

Simple measures to lock this stuff up now, will prevent the need for drug rehab later.  This is about the easiest drug prevention measure ever.

Narconon drug treatment 877-413-3073

"Fewer adolescents are telling federal researchers that they use marijuana, but the 2006 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) reported that most indicators of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use remain relatively unchanged from 2005.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) unveiled the survey results on Sept. 6, with federal officials touting a 25-percent reported decline in marijuana use among male youths between 2002 and 2006 but fretting over the 2.2 million new nonmedical users of prescription drugs, including narcotic painkillers. Most users of prescription drugs for recreational reasons reported getting the drugs free from friends or family members."

SELF CONTROL

NARCONON REFLECTION

Here is one of many Narconon success stories from today.  It is written with the hope that others will read it and realize that there is really a way out.  No matter the drug of abuse – heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, prescription drugs, or pot there is a way out to a new, drug free life.

"I had a huge win in class today – HUGE WIN.

When I started doing drugs, almost immediately all sense of my self control went out the door!  I felt like I had lost it completely.  Now, after doing this program and clearing my mind and body, I am proud to say I have regained my self love and most importantly, MY SELF CONTROL.

I am no longer going to start something I can't finish.  I definitely will know when to stop myself from making bad decisions.  Before I was clean, I would take pills consistently until I was "toasted".  Doing this also made me drink to get blacked out drunk.  I couldn't stop myself.  All of this in turn led to poor decisions and HUGE MISTAKES.

Now those desires are GONE.

I fully regained my self control – the self control that I always had before drugs.  I will keep it for the rest of my life in everything I do!"
